In Mexico, in an effort to fight off the invasion of toxic red seaweed Sargassum from the mangroves that are home to lobster and other fish populations in the protected Banco Chinchorro, UNDP Mexico and the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP, in Spanish) are setting up a pilot biodigester retrofitted to use Sargassum as feedstock. The gas will then be used as energy for the 50 or so fisherman who live on the island while they are fishing for lobster.
