In Belgium, VIB-KU Leuven Center for Microbiology and AB Biotek, a department within Associated British Foods, have entered into a research collaboration to develop new yeast strains for bioethanol production. In their joint research, both institutes hope to meet the global demand for cleaner, greener fuels.
Yeasts with relevant characteristics were screened, after which these characteristics were optimized through breeding and crossing. The most promising hybrids were extensively tested, evaluated and ultimately selected for commercialization.
