In Indonesia, Virgin Australia partnered with Pertamina to launch the first international flight using Sustainable Aviation Fuel from Bali International Airport as part of the Bali International Air Show. Virgin Australia’s Boeing 737 was powered by 160 kilolitres of SAF for two days of services out of Bali International Airport. Pertamina’s SAF, made from a 38% blend of synthetic kerosene produced from Used Cooking Oil and 62% conventional jet fuel, is certified by international standards such as CORSIA and the Renewable Energy Directive.
This collaboration showcases the growing global commitment to reducing aviation emissions. Virgin Australia, which aims to cut carbon emissions by 22% by 2030, sees SAF as essential to achieving its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. Fiona Walmsley, General Manager of Sustainability at Virgin Australia, highlighted the importance of this partnership in bridging the gap in SAF availability, particularly in Australia.
