#5 Mango bioplastics developed in Pakistan

In Pakistan, scientists have developed a biodegradable bioplastic made from mango kernels.

Dr. Anjum Nawab, an assistant professor at Karachi University, says she chose mango waste for her PhD studies because Pakistan produces a large amount of the fruit. The bioplastic is safe for aquatic life and can be broken down in hot water. Nawab adds that the bioplastic is suitable for use as shopping bags or packaging for fruits and vegetables.

Pakistan is among several countries in Southeast Asia phasing out the use of polyethylene bags, which take centuries to biodegrade in landfills.
