In the UK, Bunkerspot reported that Finnish shipping firm Wasaline will start operating its Aurora Botnia Ro-Pax vessel with certified biogas one day a week from October 13 until Christmas, in preparation for the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) that will come into force next year.
The report highlighted that biogas is more expensive than LNG, the current primary fuel of the Aurora Botnia, which operates between Vaasa and Umeå. However, Wasaline said it will cover the extra costs of the pilot project, which it has dubbed ‘Green Corridor Fridays’, on behalf of its customers.
“Aurora Botnia is the world’s most environmentally friendly ferry today, but our efforts to reduce our climate footprint continue,” said Peter Ståhlberg, Managing Director at Wasaline.
“This is a pilot project to measure the interest of our cargo owners and passengers, and whether it is financially viable to continue biogas purchases,” he added.
Wasaline said it has already reduced its CO2 emissions by 22% this year compared to last year.
