In Germany, Yara International opened its new ammonia import terminal in Brunsbüttel, Germany, capable of importing up to three million tonnes of low-emission ammonia annually to drive Germany’s hydrogen economy.
Located on the North Sea and Kiel Canal, the Brunsbüttel site where Yara has been operating for 50 years, now plays a key role in Germany’s energy transition. The ammonia imported through the terminal will be used for various applications, including producing hydrogen to decarbonize the steel and chemical sectors, as well as potentially being used as a low-emission shipping fuel.
The opening of the terminal aligns with growing demand for low-emission ammonia in Germany, where imports are expected to cover up to 70% of the national demand by 2030.
“As the world’s largest shipper and distributer of ammonia, Yara Clean Ammonia is in a pole position to secure low-emission ammonia supply to Germany, at competitive prices,” said Hans Olav Raen, CEO Yara Clean Ammonia.
